If God is for us, who can be against us?”
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans - 8:31
I’ve had seasons where the loudest voice against me was my own. I would find myself replaying old failures late at night, letting regret echo in my mind. I’d rehearse worst-case scenarios until anxiety became my constant companion, convinced that this time, the challenge I’m facing will finally be the thing that undoes me. Even in moments surrounded by support, my inner critic seemed relentless, determined to remind me of every past mistake and potential downfall.
Paul knew loud voices too. He’d been shipwrecked by storms, beaten with rods, stoned and left for dead, and betrayed by people he once called friends. His life looked like a series of defeats, an endless uphill battle that would discourage even the strongest spirit. And yet, despite the relentless opposition, he asks one audacious question: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Notice, Paul doesn’t say anything will be against us. He acknowledges the reality of opposition and struggle but insists that these things won’t ultimately win. God isn’t pretending the struggle isn’t real; He’s placing His final word above every accusation, every fear, every defeat. It’s as if the Judge Himself has stepped down from the bench, removing any distance between us, to stand at your side as your advocate and defender.
The criticism is real, yet God is for you. The uncertainty is real, yet God is for you. Even when the voice in your own head whispers that you’re not enough—that you’re unworthy or incapable—God’s voice is louder, declaring your worth and standing with you. He is for you, fiercely and unwaveringly.
This isn’t pretending everything is fine or denying the weight of what you’re facing. It’s choosing to remember who stands with you in the midst of it all. Your problems might not magically shrink, but they lose their power to define you. They stop having the final word, because the One who is for you is bigger, stronger, and more faithful than anything that’s against you. And He has never lost.
Walk in faith, rest in grace, and trust the One who walks beside you.
