Iron Sharpens Iron
Our Daily Devotion - “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17
Some of God’s best work in us doesn’t happen when we’re alone. It happens when we’re shoulder-to-shoulder with other believers.
Proverbs 27:17 reminds us that God uses people to shape us—sometimes rubbing off the rough edges, sometimes knocking us back into alignment. That kind of growth rarely feels gentle, but it’s always purposeful.
Real spiritual friendships aren’t built on flattery. They’re built on trust. The right people won’t just pat you on the back—they’ll steady you when you’re off balance. They’ll speak up when something isn’t right, even when it’s uncomfortable. Not to tear you down, but to keep you moving forward. Iron doesn’t get sharper without friction, and neither do we.
This verse isn’t just about letting others sharpen you—it’s about being willing to sharpen someone else. In a world full of shallow words and polite silence, God calls us to something better. Honest truth. Steady encouragement. Love that’s strong enough to speak when silence would be easier. Sometimes sharpening looks like advice. Sometimes it looks like prayer. Sometimes it just looks like showing up and staying put.
So don’t settle for a faith that stays safe and unchallenged. Walk with people who will help you grow—and be the kind of believer who helps others stand a little straighter and walk a little truer with Jesus. Thank God for the people who sharpen you, and ask Him to make you faithful in sharpening others.
Walk in faith, rest in grace, and trust the One who walks beside you.
