Join Heaven’s Song: Worship the Worthy Lamb
Read
“saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!’” Revelation 5:12 (ESV)
Revelation, written by the apostle John around AD 95 to seven churches in Asia Minor, unveils Jesus Christ’s lordship over history and assures believers of God’s ultimate victory. In chapter 5, John sees the heavenly throne room and a scroll—the unfolding plan of God—that no one can open except Jesus, the Lion of Judah who appears as a Lamb slain. As the Lamb takes the scroll, heaven erupts in worship, declaring His worth. This matters for daily life because it re-centers our vision: Jesus reigns, His sacrifice secures our redemption, and worship is the lens through which we face trials, decisions, and hopes.
Examine
Revelation 5:12 proclaims that Jesus—the Lamb who was slain—is supremely worthy of everything: power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing. The sevenfold doxology signals completeness. Christ’s worth is not theoretical; it’s proven by His sacrificial death and victorious resurrection. Our right response is wholehearted worship that yields our resources, influence, and affections to Him.
Connection to Jesus: Jesus fulfills the entire sacrificial story of Scripture—He is the true Passover Lamb (John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:7) and the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53). The Lamb is “slain, yet standing,” showing that His self-giving love is the very power by which He conquers sin and death. He taught and modeled this upside-down greatness—power expressed through humility, victory through sacrifice—and He invites us to follow Him in that way of life.
Main Themes:
- Worship: The only fitting response to Christ’s redeeming work is full-hearted worship with our voices, choices, and resources.
- Redemption: His worthiness flows from His cross—He purchased people for God and made us a kingdom and priests (Revelation 5:9–10).
- Lordship and Allegiance: If Jesus is worthy of all, then nothing in our lives is off-limits to Him.
Key Word Study:
- Worthy (Greek: axios): Rooted in the idea of weight or value. Jesus is deserving because His sacrifice and victory carry infinite “weight.” Our worship acknowledges reality—His incomparable value.
- “Lamb who was slain” (Greek: arnion… esphagmenon): Arnion emphasizes the Lamb; esphagmenon (from sphazō, “to slaughter”) is a perfect participle—“having been slain” with ongoing effect. Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice remains powerfully effective and central to His identity and our salvation.
Apply
Reflective Questions:
- What (or who) am I treating as most “worthy” of my time, money, and attention—and how is Jesus inviting me to re-center my worship on Him?
- Which part of the sevenfold list—power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, blessing—am I most tempted to keep for myself?
- How could worship (praise, surrender, gratitude) reshape a stressful situation I’m facing this week?
Real-Life Application:
- Pray the Sevenfold Surrender: Today, offer each area to Jesus—Power (my decisions), Wealth (my budget), Wisdom (my plans), Might (my energy), Honor (my reputation), Glory (the credit I seek), Blessing (my words). Name one concrete action for each (e.g., give generously, seek counsel, attribute credit to others).
- Turn Work into Worship: Before a meeting, whisper, “Worthy is the Lamb.” Choose integrity, excellence, and kindness as an offering to Christ.
- Practice Costly Love: Identify one act today that costs you something—time, comfort, or pride—to serve another in Jesus’ name.
Pray
Father, we praise You for the Lamb who is worthy—Jesus, who was slain and now reigns. Forgive us for giving our best attention, resources, and honor to lesser things. By Your Spirit, reorient our hearts to adore Christ above all. Help us surrender our power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing to Him today. Fill us with courage to choose costly obedience and joy-filled worship. Make our lives a living doxology that points others to Your Son. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Reflection: Imagine your day as a sanctuary and your tasks as instruments in a symphony already resounding in heaven. As you move through conversations, decisions, and interruptions, hear the chorus: “Worthy is the Lamb.” Let each choice be a note of worship, tuning your heart to His victory and love.
Call to Action: Write the seven words—power, wealth, wisdom, might, honor, glory, blessing—on a note or in your phone. As you go through the day, check them off by a simple act of surrender in each area. Walk forward knowing the worthy Lamb goes with you—and your worship changes everything.
