Keep Walking with Jesus, Just as You Began

Read

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,” Colossians 2:6 (ESV):

Colossians is a letter from the Apostle Paul (likely written around AD 60–62 while imprisoned) to believers in the city of Colossae. These Christians faced pressures from false teachings—mixtures of human philosophy, legalism, and spiritual mysticism. Paul writes to exalt the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ and to ground believers in Him alone. Chapter 2 urges the church not to be taken captive by human traditions but to continue in the same Christ-centered faith they first embraced. This verse calls us to live each day in the same grace, faith, and Lordship with which we began our journey—because Jesus is not only the starting point; He is the whole path.

Examine

Paul’s charge is simple and profound: the way you began in Christ—by grace through faith, acknowledging Jesus as Lord—is the way you must continue. “Walk” means your daily lifestyle. Christianity is not a momentary decision but an ongoing relationship where Jesus’ Lordship shapes your choices, values, and habits. True growth isn’t moving beyond Jesus; it’s going deeper into Him.

Connection to Jesus: This verse centers on Christ’s Lordship and our union with Him (“in Him”). Jesus invited people to “Follow me” and taught us to abide in Him (John 15). He demonstrated perfect obedience to the Father and now empowers us by His Spirit to live in His way. The gospel that saved you is the same power that sustains you—because Jesus Himself is both Savior and Lord, the One you depend on moment by moment.

Main Themes:
- Lordship of Christ: Jesus is not an accessory to your life; He is the Leader of it.
- Perseverance in Grace: You don’t outgrow grace—you grow by grace.
- Union with Christ: Your strength and direction flow from being “in Him.”

Key Word Study:
- “Received” (Greek: paralambanō): To take to oneself, to accept what is handed down. It includes receiving both the message of the gospel and the very Person of Christ. You didn’t just accept ideas—you received Jesus as Lord.
- “Walk” (Greek: peripateō): To conduct one’s life, to move about in a way of living. It’s ongoing, habitual life—step-by-step obedience flowing from relationship.

Apply

Reflective Questions:
- Where am I tempted to shift from grace to self-reliance instead of continuing to walk in Christ?
- What specific area of my life today needs to come under Jesus’ Lordship (time, words, finances, relationships)?
- What daily rhythm could help me remember to “walk in Him,” not just think about Him?

Real-Life Application:
- Start with Surrender: Each morning pray, “Jesus, You are Lord. I received You by grace—help me walk in You today,” and name one area you’ll submit to Him.
- Midday Alignment: Set two brief alarms (e.g., 12:00 and 3:00) labeled “Walk in Him.” Pause for 30–60 seconds to realign your thoughts, attitude, and current task to Christ’s way (humility, integrity, love).
- Scripture Anchor: Write Colossians 2:6 on a card or your phone lock screen. Before a key decision, read it and ask, “What does walking in Jesus look like right now?”

Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, I praise You that Jesus is Lord—sufficient, supreme, and present with me. I confess I often try to manage life in my own strength or drift into habits that don’t reflect Your way. Forgive me. Today, teach me to walk in the same grace by which I first received Christ. Holy Spirit, empower my will, purify my motives, and guide my steps. Let my thoughts, words, and actions move in step with Jesus. Keep me rooted in Him, steady and faithful. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Closing Reflection: Picture a steady path with Jesus walking beside you. With each step, He matches your pace, carries your burdens, and points the way. You don’t need to sprint or strive—just take the next faithful step in Him. One step at a time becomes a lifelong journey of grace.

Call to Action: Set one “Walk in Him” reminder for today and act on it immediately—choose honesty, show kindness, or pause to pray before a decision. Remember: the Lord who saved you is the Lord who walks with you. Stay close to Him today.
