The First Step of Faith
Walking with Jesus: 31 Days to a Closer Walk
Day 2 — The First Step of Faith
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance, and he went out not knowing where he was going.” Hebrews 11:8
Faith often begins with taking steps of obedience, even in the absence of complete understanding.
Take, for instance, Abraham, who did not wait for every answer to his questions. Instead, he chose to place his trust in the One who called him to a new and uncertain path.
In our journey of faith, we frequently seek detailed blueprints for our lives, wanting every twist and turn mapped out. However, God requires us to take a leap of faith and to trust in His wisdom and His timing.
True faith does not imply the absence of doubt. Rather, it manifests itself as a willingness to move toward Him despite those uncertainties. Each hesitant step we take reflects a heartfelt declaration: “Your Word is sufficient for me.”
As we navigate through this journey, we find that the experiences we encounter serve as a profound classroom. It is within this dynamic process that our trust matures and our faith steadies, enabling us to grow deeper in our relationship with Him.
Each challenge we face and every act of obedience shapes our understanding and strengthens our resolve to follow His guidance.
Let us pray.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to take the next step, even when we do not see the whole road. Give us the courage to trust You, to trust Your ways, and to walk forward with a deeper understanding of Your wisdom and timing.
In Jesus Christ’s name, we pray.
Amen.

Ray's Reflection
There is something deeply honest about Abraham’s story. God called him to go, but He did not hand him a full map, a printed itinerary, or a neatly organized schedule. Abraham had the promise, but he did not have all the particulars. That is where faith begins.
Most of us would rather have the whole road laid out before we take the first step. We want confirmation, clarity, backup plans, and a little assurance that nothing uncomfortable is waiting around the bend. But walking with Jesus does not always work that way. Sometimes the Lord simply says, “Follow Me,” and the next act of faith is obedience.
Anne and I live this every day. We do not get up in the morning, to do things for God, we get up and make ourselves available, so God can do things through us. We have no plans, no agendas, no other motives, other than to do His will.
Faith is not pretending we have no questions, because we do, but faith is trusting God enough to move forward while we still have questions. It is placing our confidence not in what we can see, but in the character of the One who is leading us.
That first step may not look dramatic to anyone else. It may be a prayer whispered in private, a decision to forgive, a call to serve, a door we finally walk through, or a burden we finally lay down. But heaven sees it.
The first step of faith is not about knowing the whole journey. It is about knowing the One who walks with us. And when He leads, even uncertain ground becomes holy ground.
The Lord be with you,
In His love,
