Struck Down, But Not Destroyed
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” - 2 Corinthians 4:8–9There are days when life hits us so hard that simply getting back on our feet feels impossible.Sometimes it's the loss of someone we love. Sometimes it's an unexpected diagnosis, a family crisis that seems to have no end, or the weight of caring for others when we are barely holding ourselves together. And sometimes, if we're willing to admit it, we're just tired. The Apostle Paul understood something about being knocked down.In Acts 14, we read that Paul was stoned by an angry crowd in Lystra, dragged outside the city, and left for dead. But when the disciples gathered around him, Paul got up and went back into the city.Think about that for a moment.Paul wasn't writing about suffering from the comfort of an easy life. He knew what it meant to be beaten, rejected, abandoned by people, and pushed beyond what most of us could imagine.Yet he could write, “Struck down, but not destroyed.”Why?Because Paul's confidence wasn't in his own strength. It was in the Lord who sustained him.In fact, just one verse earlier, Paul reminds us that we are like fragile jars of clay, carrying a treasure far greater than ourselves. The power belongs to God, not to us.And I believe that is something many of us need to remember today.Being a Christian doesn't mean we won't get knocked down. It means that even when life brings us to our knees, we have not been abandoned by the One who holds us.Faith doesn't mean we never hurt. It doesn't mean we never cry, grow weary, or wonder how we're going to make it through another day.Even Paul admitted that he was perplexed. There were things he didn't understand. But being perplexed was not the same as being without hope. And being struck down was not the same as being destroyed.Maybe you're reading this devotion this morning while carrying something nobody else knows about. Perhaps you've prayed for someone for years, only to watch them make another terrible decision. Maybe you've buried someone you loved, received bad news, or spent another sleepless night wondering what tomorrow will bring.I won't tell you that everything is going to work out the way you want it to. Scripture doesn't make that promise. But I will remind you of what Scripture does promise.God has not abandoned His children. The same Paul who wrote about being struck down would later remind the Corinthians that although outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16).Sometimes God's strength is seen in a remarkable deliverance. Other times, it is seen in a weary believer who continues trusting Him through tears, pain, and unanswered questions. And sometimes, the most faithful thing we can do is admit that we cannot carry the burden any longer and place it in His hands. My friend, if life has knocked you down today, don't confuse your weakness with defeat. You may be hurting. You may be exhausted. You may not have the answers. But you are not alone. The Lord who sustained Paul is the same Lord who walks with His children today. You may be struck down, but in Christ, you are not without hope.

Struck Down, But Not Destroyed

When the Church Became About Us
“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” — Colossians 1:18 (KJV)For several months now, I've felt a growing concern in my heart about the direction of the Church and what we have allowed Christianity to become.Sometimes, as I share the Gospel, whether in a church, a hospital room, an assisted-living facility, or simply sitting across a kitchen table, I wonder whether the words I'm sharing are reaching hearts or simply bouncing off the walls.I don't say that because I expect everyone to agree with me, or because I believe I have all the answers. I don't. I'm still learning, still growing, and still depending on the same grace of God that I share with others. But there are things we need to talk about, even when those conversations make us uncomfortable. And one of those things is how easily we have allowed Christianity to become more about ourselves than about Jesus Christ.Somewhere along the way, something changed.I'm not sure I can tell you exactly when it happened, but I can tell you what concerns me.We began measuring Christianity by how it makes us feel rather than how faithfully we follow Jesus. We started asking what the Church could do for us instead of asking what Christ has called us to do.And somewhere in that shift, we began placing ourselves at the center of something that has always belonged to Jesus Christ. Now, before we go any further, let me make something clear. Our needs matter to God. Our struggles matter. Our suffering matters. The Bible was written for our instruction, encouragement, correction, and hope. Romans 15:4 reminds us that the Scriptures were written for our learning, so that through patience and the comfort of God's Word, we might have hope.God loves us. He hears our prayers. He comes near to the brokenhearted and gives strength to the weary. He invites us into a personal relationship with Him.There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to leave church encouraged, comforted, and strengthened. Scripture teaches us to encourage and build one another up.But God's Word was written for our benefit, not to make us the center of its message. That place belongs to Jesus Christ alone.Colossians 1:18 tells us that Christ is the head of the Church and that in everything He is to have the preeminence. The Church belongs to Him. He purchased it with His own blood. He is its head, its foundation, and the reason for everything we do.The Church exists for the glory of God and the good of His people. But when our wants, preferences, and comfort take precedence over His Word and His will, we have lost sight of why the Church exists. When Feeling Good Replaces Following JesusYears ago, researchers identified a belief system they called Moralistic Therapeutic Deism. That's quite a mouthful, but the idea behind it is surprisingly simple. It describes a way of thinking in which God exists, wants us to be nice people, wants us to be happy, generally stays out of our business unless we need His help, and ultimately welcomes good people into heaven.Does any of that sound familiar? It should concern us, because much of what passes for Christianity today has begun to resemble that description. We have developed a version of Christianity where God is expected to bless our plans, fix our problems, improve our circumstances, and make us feel better about ourselves. But what happens when His Word tells us something we don't want to hear? What happens when following Jesus requires us to change our behavior, surrender our desires, forgive someone who has hurt us, or walk away from something we know is wrong? What happens when Jesus calls us to deny ourselves rather than satisfy ourselves?Jesus said in Luke 9:23: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”Those words don't fit comfortably into the version of Christianity we so often hear proclaimed today. They speak of surrender, sacrifice, and obedience.Jesus never called us to a life centered on our own wants. He called us to a life surrendered to Him, where true joy and purpose are found.Somewhere along the way, we began confusing being a good person with being a follower of Jesus Christ. Please don't misunderstand me. Kindness matters. Compassion matters. Loving our neighbors matters. These things are commanded throughout Scripture. But being nice is not the Gospel.Being happy is not the central purpose of our salvation. And being a good person will never make us righteous before a holy God.Ephesians 2:8–10 reminds us that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works, but that we are created in Christ Jesus for good works.Good works are the fruit of salvation, not the price we pay to obtain it.The Gospel begins with the uncomfortable truth that we are sinners in need of a Savior. It takes us to the cross, where Jesus paid the price we could never pay, and to the empty tomb, where death was defeated. It calls us to repentance, faith, and a new life in Christ. And sometimes that message will make us uncomfortable. It will comfort us, but it will also confront us.It will encourage us, but it will also correct us.The Gospel assures us of God's unfailing love, but it also reminds us that His love changes us. He does not simply affirm the lives we are living. He calls us to leave our old lives behind and follow Him.Have We Forgotten Whose Church This Is?I fear that in our efforts to make Christianity more attractive to the world, we have sometimes removed the very things that make the Gospel necessary. We want forgiveness without repentance. We want blessings without obedience. We want the promises of Jesus without the demands of discipleship. We want a Savior, but struggle with the idea of surrendering to a Lord. And perhaps most troubling of all, we have become comfortable listening to sermons that make us feel good while resisting the Scriptures that call us to change.Paul warned Timothy that a time would come when people would no longer endure sound doctrine but would gather teachers who would tell them what their itching ears wanted to hear (2 Timothy 4:3–4).That warning should concern every preacher, every church leader, and every believer.Myself included. The problem begins when making people feel good becomes more important than helping them become more like Jesus.I understand that not everyone will welcome that message.Jesus Himself watched people walk away when His teaching became difficult (John 6:60–66).But He did not change the truth to keep the crowd. And neither should we.There are days when I have to remind myself that my calling isn't about applause or popularity. It's not about filling a building or keeping everyone comfortable. My responsibility is to love people enough to tell them what God's Word actually says, with patience, humility, and compassion.Sometimes that means saying what is difficult, not simply what is popular. And before I challenge anyone else with the Word, I must first allow it to examine my own heart.Because I am not exempt from the very Scriptures I preach.A Question Worth AskingHave we become so concerned with what people want from the Church that we've forgotten what Jesus wants from His Church? That's a question I believe each of us needs to bring before the Lord. Are we coming to worship because we love Jesus, or primarily because of what we hope to receive? Are we opening our Bibles to hear what God has said, or simply looking for something that will affirm what we already believe? Are we willing to follow Christ when His Word challenges our opinions, our preferences, and the way we live?Christianity was never intended to be a religious arrangement in which we occasionally acknowledge God while continuing to live as though everything revolves around us.It is a life surrendered, day by day, to Jesus Christ. And that surrender is not a burden designed to rob us of joy. It is the beginning of discovering the life that can only be found in Him.I care deeply about the Church and the people God has entrusted to my care. That's why I cannot remain silent about the things that have been weighing on my heart.I'm not trying to discourage anyone from attending church, nor am I suggesting that the Church has no place for the hurting, the struggling, or those who desperately need encouragement.Quite the opposite. The Church should be a place where the broken find compassion, the weary find encouragement, sinners hear the Gospel, and believers are strengthened in their walk with Christ. But above everything else, it must remain a place where Jesus Christ is honored, His Word is faithfully proclaimed, and His people are encouraged to follow Him.I am not trying to drive people away from the Church.I want to see the Church return to Jesus.Because Jesus did not die on the cross simply to make us feel better about the lives we are living. He died to save us from our sins, reconcile us to God, and give us new life in Him.And perhaps that is what we need to remember most. The Church was never meant to revolve around us. It has always been, and always will be, about the One who saved us.

Discernment is Essential
You don’t need to know much about Freddy Krueger to know something’s off when you see him holding a Bible. The danger is plain. But in real life, spiritual deception doesn’t always look so obvious. That’s why I feel the need to speak plainly about false prophets. The real threats often come dressed in ways that seem safe.Evil, when it’s out in the open, is easy to spot. Monsters don’t usually pretend to be anything else. But spiritual danger is different. Sometimes it looks like a preacher, a leader, or someone you trust. That’s what makes it so dangerous.False prophets don’t always look the part. They might stand in a pulpit, read from the Bible, and talk about Jesus. But if you listen closely, their words don’t line up with the truth. Instead of pointing people to hope, they lead them away from it. The real danger is often quiet and hard to spot.Jesus himself warned, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves" (Matthew 7:15). The warning is clear: Not everyone who claims to speak for Jesus truly represents Him. Discernment is essential.Keep your Bible open. Stay close to God’s Word. Let the truth guide you and protect you. Test what you hear by what Scripture says. That’s how you spot what’s false, whether it comes from an evil stranger or someone who looks trustworthy.

Your Heavenly Father Hears You
"And when you pray, do not "heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”There is something wonderfully comforting about knowing that when we bow our heads in prayer, we are not speaking into an empty room. We are speaking to our heavenly Father, who already knows our hearts, understands our needs, and loves us more than we can comprehend.Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6 that prayer is not about finding the right words, repeating religious phrases, or trying to impress God with how spiritual we sound.Prayer is not about convincing God to care. It is coming to the Father who already does.Think about that for a moment. Before you ever whisper a word, God knows what is troubling you. He knows the burdens you carried to bed last night and the concerns that greeted you when you opened your eyes this morning. He knows about the medical report you're waiting for, the family member you're worried about, the bills you don't know how you'll pay, and the prayers you've been praying for years without seeing an answer. And yet, Jesus tells us to pray. Why? Because prayer is about more than asking God for something. It is about our relationship with Him.A child doesn't need an appointment to speak with a loving father. Neither do we need some special religious language to approach our heavenly Father. Some of the most sincere prayers I've ever heard were spoken through tears, in hospital rooms, at the bedside of someone nearing eternity, or by someone who had simply reached the end of their strength.Sometimes the entire prayer was nothing more than, "Lord, help me."And that was enough. The length of our prayers does not determine whether God hears us. Neither does the strength of our emotions or our ability to put everything into words. What matters is the One to whom we are praying.Jesus also tells us in John 15:7, "If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you."Notice that Jesus connects prayer with abiding in Him. Prayer is not a means to persuade God to give us everything we want. As we walk with Christ and allow His Word to shape our lives, our desires begin to align with His will. And sometimes that means trusting God even when His answer is not the one we hoped to receive.Over the years, I've learned to approach prayer with three simple words:Pray. Believe. Release.Pray because God invites us to bring our needs before Him.Believe because we know He hears us and is able to do far more than we can imagine.Release because we trust His wisdom, His timing, and His will more than our own understanding. We don't have to tell God how to be God. We simply need to trust Him to be the loving Father He has promised to be.So whatever you're facing today, bring it to the Lord. You don't need a carefully prepared speech. You don't need to pretend you're stronger than you are.Just come to Him.Your prayers do not have to be perfect to be heard by a perfect Father.

Your Heavenly Father Hears You

Don't Wait for the Rain to Pray
“Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” — Psalm 62:8 (ESV)I came across a quote from the legendary baseball player Satchel Paige that caught my attention a couple of years ago: “Don't pray when it rains if you don't pray when the sun shines.”A lot of truth is packed into those few words. It's easy to go about our lives when everything is going well. When our health is good, our families are safe, and our needs are being met, we sometimes forget just how dependent we are upon the Lord. But let the telephone ring in the middle of the night with bad news. Let the doctor walk into the room with a serious diagnosis. Let something happen to someone we love, and suddenly we remember how desperately we need God.I understand those moments.I've spent much of the night with my father, who has suffered a major stroke. There is something about sitting beside someone you love, knowing there are things beyond your ability to change, that reminds you just how little control we really have. And how much we need the Lord. But here's what I've been thinking about this morning.Prayer was never intended to be something we turn to only when everything else has failed. Prayer is how we walk with God through every season of life. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to “pray without ceasing.”That doesn't mean spending every waking moment on our knees. It means living in fellowship with God, talking with Him, trusting Him, thanking Him, and depending upon Him throughout our days.We pray when the sun is shining because we recognize where our blessings come from.We pray when the rain begins to fall because we know where our help comes from. And we keep praying when the storm doesn't pass as quickly as we had hoped, because our faith rests in God Himself, not merely in the answers we are hoping to receive.I don't believe prayer is about persuading God to do things our way. It's about bringing our hearts before Him, believing that He hears us, and trusting Him with what we cannot control.Pray. Believe. Release. And please, don't misunderstand Satchel Paige's words. If you haven't prayed in a long time and you're facing a storm today, pray anyway. Our heavenly Father doesn't turn away those who come to Him in their hour of need. But don't wait for another storm to begin talking with Him.Thank Him for the ordinary mornings. Thank Him for another day with those you love. Thank Him for the blessings you've grown so accustomed to that you sometimes overlook them.Because the same God who walks with us through the sunshine has promised never to leave us when the rain begins to fall. And sometimes, when you're exhausted, worried, and don't even know what to pray anymore, two simple words are enough: “Lord, help.”He hears those prayers, too.

Don't Wait for the Rain to Pray

Who is the Thief in John 10:10?
Have we been reading one of the most familiar verses in the Bible without understanding what Jesus was actually saying?“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10 (NIV)For years, I've heard this Scripture preached as a warning about Satan. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy, while Jesus comes to give us abundant life. And while Scripture certainly teaches that Satan is our enemy, there is something important we miss when we take this verse out of its original context.Jesus was not primarily talking about Satan. He was warning about false shepherds, corrupt religious leaders, and those who use God's people for their own purposes.Go back and read John chapter 9.Jesus had just healed a man who had been blind from birth. Instead of rejoicing over what God had done, the Pharisees interrogated the man, challenged his testimony, and eventually threw him out. These were the religious leaders of the day. Men who claimed to speak for God, yet failed to recognize the very Son of God standing before them. Then Jesus begins speaking about sheep, shepherds, thieves, and robbers in John chapter 10.He is still addressing the same religious leadership. The thieves were those who entered the sheepfold for their own gain. They claimed spiritual authority but did not truly care for the sheep. They used their positions to control people rather than lead them to God.And Jesus makes the contrast unmistakable. The false shepherd takes from the sheep. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. Now bring that message forward into the Church today. How many people have been spiritually wounded by those who claimed to speak for God?How many have been manipulated through fear, exploited financially, burdened with false teaching, or led away from the truth of Scripture by someone standing behind a pulpit? How many have been taught to follow a personality, a ministry, or an organization rather than Jesus Christ? We are quick to blame the devil for stealing, killing, and destroying, while sometimes overlooking the very people Jesus was warning us about. That ought to concern every one of us who has been entrusted with caring for God's people. The Church does not belong to the pastor. The sheep do not belong to the preacher. And the ministry was never intended to become a means of personal gain. The sheep belong to Jesus Christ.A faithful shepherd feeds the sheep with God's Word, protects them from false teaching, and points them continually to Christ. He does not use the flock to build his own kingdom. There is an important lesson here for those of us who preach, teach, and serve in ministry. We must be careful that we do not become the very kind of religious leaders Jesus condemned. And there is an equally important lesson for the Church. Not everyone who claims to speak for God is speaking for God.Read the Scriptures. Test what you are being taught. Learn to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd.John 10:10 is not simply a warning about what the devil wants to do to us. In its context, it is also a serious warning about what unfaithful religious leadership can do to God's people. But above all, it is a beautiful reminder of who Jesus is.He is the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep, loves His sheep, and gave His life for His sheep.Perhaps it is time we stopped reading John 10:10 as an isolated verse and started listening to the warning Jesus was giving His Church.Because the Word of God cannot mean today what it never meant when it was written.~ ray mileur
