A long, long time ago, the people of Israel were traveling through the desert. They had left Egypt, where they were slaves, because God wanted to set them free. Their leader was Moses, a kind and brave man who listened to God.One day, God called Moses to come up a tall, rocky mountain called Mount Sinai. The mountain was covered in clouds and there was thunder and lightning. It was very, very special because God was going to talk to Moses!When Moses reached the top, God told him some very important rules to help everyone live together kindly and safely. These were called the Ten Commandments. God wanted everyone to love Him and to love each other.God wrote these rules on two big stone tablets. Some of the commandments were: “Love God most of all,” “Honor your parents,” “Do not steal,” “Always tell the truth,” and “Do not hurt anyone.” These rules helped the people know right from wrong, and God gave them because He loved them so much.Moses came down the mountain holding the stone tablets. All the people listened as Moses shared God’s special rules. Everyone was happy to know how to make God happy and how to take care of each other.
