When Answered Prayer Becomes Ordinary
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18 About eighteen months ago, a man came to me after church carrying a burden that had become almost too heavy to bear. His business was on the verge of bankruptcy. There were no jobs on the books that he could begin for weeks. He was facing the possibility of losing everything he had worked so hard to build. His home was at risk. His finances were falling apart. Even his marriage was beginning to feel the strain. He needed God to make a way where he could not see one.So we prayed. We prayed for provision. We prayed for his business. We prayed for his marriage. We prayed for God to open doors that seemed firmly shut.Fast-forward eighteen months.I saw that same man Sunday. This time, his complaint was very different. He was busy. Very busy.In fact, he has more work ahead of him than he may even want. And believe me, I understand what it means to be too busy. There are seasons when the phone keeps ringing, people keep needing you, the work keeps piling up, and you wonder how in the world you are going to get it all done.A friend of mine once said when somebody asked if he was behind in his work: “I’m not behind. I just have a lot of work ahead of me.”I have always liked that. But as I listened Sunday, something crossed my mind. Eighteen months earlier, we were praying for work. Now there is so much work that it has become a burden.Eighteen months earlier, he had been praying that the business would survive. It survived. He was praying that bankruptcy could be avoided. It was.He was worried about losing his home.He still has it.He was afraid of losing everything he had worked for.God made a way.His marriage was under tremendous strain.God carried them through. And standing there Sunday, I found myself wondering how quickly yesterday’s answered prayer can become today’s inconvenience.I am not questioning this man’s heart. God knows his heart, and God knows mine. But as I reflected, I realized this pattern is common for many of us. But the Lord used that conversation to speak to me about my own tendency to forget answered prayers. Because I have done the same thing.Maybe you have too.We pray desperately for God to open a door, and then complain because we have to walk through it.We pray for work, then complain because we are working. We pray for children, then complain about the noise. We pray for a home, then complain about the repairs. We pray for a ministry opportunity, then complain about the demands. We pray for people to come to church, then complain because the parking lot is full.We pray for God to use us, then sometimes complain when serving Him interrupts our schedule. That is how quickly blessings—and answered prayers—can become ordinary if we are not careful. First Thessalonians 5:18 says: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”Notice Paul does not say to give thanks only when everything is comfortable. He says, “in all circumstances.”Gratitude is not pretending that life is easy.Gratitude is remembering who carried us when life was hard.Sometimes we need to stop in the middle of what feels overwhelming and remember what we once prayed for. That job wearing you out today may be the job you once begged God to provide. That busy business schedule may be the answer to prayers prayed when bankruptcy seemed only weeks away. That house needing maintenance may be the same house you once feared losing. That marriage requiring patience and work may be the marriage you once pleaded with God to save. That ministry assignment exhausting you may be the very opportunity you once asked God to give you. There is nothing wrong with being tired. There is nothing sinful about admitting that life has become busy. But we should never become so busy carrying the blessing that we forget the One who gave it.Sometimes we need to walk back mentally to the place where we prayed the desperate prayer.Remember the fear.Remember the uncertainty.Remember the sleepless nights.Remember wondering whether God was going to make a way. Then look around. You are still here.God provided.God sustained you.God opened doors.God carried you farther than you thought you could go.Maybe everything didn't turn out exactly the way you expected, but the same God you cried out to in the valley didn't abandon you when you reached the other side. And when God answers prayer, there ought to be a moment when we stop long enough to say: “Lord, thank You.”Not because everything is perfect. Not because the work is easy. Not because there are no more problems. But because we remember. We remember where we were.We remember what we prayed. And we recognize how far God has brought us.Before you complain about what is on your plate today, take a moment and ask yourself:Did I once pray for some of this? You might discover that what feels like a burden today is actually yesterday’s answered prayer.Stay grateful by remembering how far you’ve come and how your prayers have been answered. Stay humble, recognizing that every blessing comes from God. And never become so accustomed to the blessing that you forget the One who blessed you.The Lord be with you.In His loveray

When Answered Prayer Becomes Ordinary

THE DEATH OF CONSUMER CHRISTIANITY
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Luke 9:23–24Big Idea: Jesus never called customers. Jesus called disciples.Maybe one of the greatest things that could happen to the Church in our generation would be the death of consumer Christianity and the resurrection of biblical discipleship. INTRODUCTION — WHEN CHRISTIANITY BECOMES SOMETHING WE CONSUMEWe shop for churches. We compare:Preachers Worship Programs Ministries BuildingThe question quietly becomes:“What do you have for me?”There is nothing wrong with good preaching, good music, strong ministries, or wanting our children taught well. The problem begins when following Jesus becomes primarily about what we receive instead of who we become.When:- Church becomes a product. - Worship becomes entertainment. - Preaching becomes content. - Christians become customers. - But Jesus never called customers. He called disciples. Jesus said:Deny yourself. Take up your cross. Follow Me. 1. JESUS DID NOT CALL US TO BE CONSUMERS — HE CALLED US TO BE DISCIPLES A. Consumer Christianity puts ME at the center. The world says:Find yourself. Promote yourself. Protect yourself. Indulge yourself. Put yourself first. Jesus says:“Deny yourself.”That does not mean I am worthless. It means I am no longer the center.Consumer Christianity asks:“Did I like the music?” “Did I like the preacher?” “Did somebody notice me?” “Did I get anything out of church?”Maybe Jesus would ask:“What did you bring?”Did you bring:Worship? Prayer? Encouragement? Compassion? A servant’s heart? Did you notice the person sitting alone?Did you see the person who was hurting?B. Christianity is surrender, not satisfaction. Romans 12:1 — “Present your bodies a living sacrifice…”A living sacrifice. Not a satisfied customer. Not a spectator. The altar is not where we negotiate with God. The altar is where we surrender. There is a difference between:“Jesus, bless my plans.”and“Jesus, my life is Yours.” Pasted text 2. CONSUMER CHRISTIANITY ASKS, “WHAT CAN I GET?” — DISCIPLESHIP ASKS, “WHAT CAN I GIVE?”“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister…” Mark 10:45Jesus came to serve. The King washed feet.Jesus:- Touched lepers. - Welcomed children. - Stopped for beggars. - Sat with broken people. - Walked toward people everybody else walked around. - Ultimately gave His life.A. If following Jesus makes us more demanding rather than more serving, something is wrong. The closer we walk with Jesus, the more we should look like Jesus. And Jesus was a servant.B. Ministry is not somebody else’s job.We sometimes say:“That is what we pay the pastor for.”“That is what the staff does.”“That is what the ministry team does.”But Ephesians 4 says pastors and teachers equip the saints for the work of ministry.Christianity is not a spectator sport. There are no bleachers in the Kingdom of God.Every believer can:- Encourage. - Pray. - Serve. - Love. - Carry somebody’s burden.C. Availability is the beginning of ministry.People say:“I wish God would use me.”The answer is simple:Make yourself available. We don’t do great things for God.We make ourselves available for God to do His work through us.You don't need:- A title. - A microphone. - A platform. - Your name in the bulletin. Somebody needs:- Prayer. - Encouragement. - A meal. - A ride. - A hospital visit. - Somebody to listen. - Somebody to remind them they haven't been forgotten. That is ministry.Stop asking:“What does this church have for me?”Start asking:“Lord, who can I serve?” Pasted text 3. CONSUMERS LEAVE WHEN THE COST GETS TOO HIGH — DISCIPLES STAY WITH JESUS -John 6Jesus fed the multitude. The crowd loved the bread.Jesus said:“Ye seek me… because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.” They liked what Jesus gave them. Then the teaching became difficult.“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.” - John 6:66They liked:- The bread. - The miracles. - The benefits. But when discipleship became difficult, they walked away.Jesus asked the Twelve:“Will ye also go away?”Peter answered:“Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” That is discipleship.A. Following Jesus will sometimes cost us.There will be:- Unanswered questions. - Hospital rooms. - Funerals. - Disappointments. - Pain. - Seasons when heaven seems silent. - Moments when Scripture confronts us.That is when we discover whether Jesus is really Lord or merely our supplier. Can I worship when I don't understand? Can I trust when I cannot trace His hand? Can I follow when following hurts?Consumer Christianity says:“Jesus, take care of me and I'll stick around.”Discipleship says:“Jesus, You are Lord whether the road leads through green pastures or the valley of the shadow of death.” 4. THE CHURCH IS NOT A MARKETPLACE — IT IS A BODY“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.” You don't consume a body. 1 Corinthians 12:27You belong to it.The Bible calls the Church:A body. A family. A flock. A household. Those are relationship words. And relationships require grace.A. Church can get messy. People fail.Leaders fail.Christians disappoint each other.Sometimes there are legitimate biblical reasons to leave a congregation. But there is a difference between biblical conviction and constantly shopping for a church that perfectly satisfies our preferences. You will never find a perfect church. And if you do find one, don't join it—you'll ruin it.Because the Church is made up of people like us:Saved by grace.Still growing.Still learning.Still needing mercy.B. Jesus said the world would recognize us by our love. - John 13:35Not:Our building. Attendance. Music. Programs. Online following. But:“If ye have love one to another.”Maybe revival begins when:Somebody notices the lonely. Somebody carries a burden. Somebody forgives. Somebody stays. Somebody asks, “How can I pray for you?”That looks like Jesus. THE DEATH HAS TO BEGIN WITH METhis sermon is not primarily about everybody else.It is about me.Ask:Have I made Christianity about my comfort? Have I made church about my preferences? Am I more interested in being served than serving? Do I want recognition more than faithfulness? Do I follow Jesus because of what He gives me—or because He is Lord? Am I carrying a cross, or trying to make the cross comfortable? Jesus said:“Take up his cross daily.”Daily.Every morning:“Lord, this life belongs to You.”My time. My plans. My gifts. My resources. My reputation. My future.Use me. Send me. Interrupt me. Correct me. Change me.That is discipleship. Pasted text CLOSING — BACK TO THE CROSSAt Calvary there were no comfortable seats. There was a cross.Jesus did not stand at a distance and tell us He loved us.He gave Himself.Hands pierced.Feet pierced.Blood shed.Life given. And when I look at the cross, it gets difficult to keep asking:“What am I getting out of this?”The cross changes the question:“Lord, after everything You have done for me, how can I give You my life?”Maybe the Church doesn't need another gimmick.Maybe we simply need to get back:Back to Jesus. Back to the cross. Back to Scripture. Back to prayer. Back to serving. Back to loving people. Back to making disciples.Let consumer Christianity die.Let spectator Christianity die.Let comfortable Christianity die.And let biblical Christianity rise:Cross-carrying. Bible-believing. Spirit-led. People-loving. Gospel-sharing. Servant-hearted disciples. And may it begin with us.May it begin with me.

THE DEATH OF CONSUMER CHRISTIANITY

The Leading of the Holy Spirit
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” — Romans 8:14 Where do you need God’s direction today? Maybe you're facing a decision and simply don't know which way to go. Maybe there is a situation you cannot fix, a relationship you do not understand, or a burden you have carried longer than you ever expected. Sometimes we simply pray, “Lord, show me what to do.” The good news is that God has not left His children to wander through this life alone. Romans 8:14 tells us, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” If you belong to Christ, the Holy Spirit Himself dwells within you. His presence is not limited to pastors, missionaries, or those who appear especially spiritual by outward standards. He is God’s precious gift to every believer—a constant presence, counselor, and comforter. We do not earn His presence. We do not become worthy enough to receive His guidance. We do not have to convince God to lead us. The real question is not whether God will lead, but whether we are willing to follow. One foundational truth must be settled from the very beginning: the Holy Spirit will never, under any circumstance, lead you contrary to the Word of God. The Spirit and the Scriptures are not competing voices. The same Holy Spirit who leads the believer is the Spirit who inspired the Word. Galatians 5:16 says: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” The Spirit will always lead us toward Christ, toward truth, toward holiness, toward love, toward obedience. He will never lead us into something Scripture calls sin. This matters deeply, because we sometimes baptize our own desires in spiritual language, mistaking our wishes for God’s whisper. “I feel led.” “God told me.” “I just have peace about it.” Those words should never become shortcuts around Scripture. Our feelings can be wrong. Our desires can deceive us. Circumstances can be misunderstood. But the Word of God remains our sure foundation. If what I believe I am hearing contradicts Scripture, I do not need additional confirmation. It did not come from God.Galatians 5:25 says: “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”I love that picture. Keeping in step. Not running ahead of God. Not dragging behind Him. Not demanding that God bless the direction I have already chosen. Walking with Him. Sometimes the hardest part of following the Holy Spirit is that we already know where we want to go. We pray for guidance while quietly hoping God agrees with us. But following requires surrender. There have been plenty of times in my life when I wanted God to give me a map. I wanted to know what would happen tomorrow, next week, and next year. Usually, He gave me enough light for the next step. And then another. And another. That is walking by faith. Learn His Voice in the Quiet Place Jesus said in John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”One of the best ways to recognize the Spirit’s leading in life's difficult moments is to spend time with God in the ordinary moments. Open the Bible when there is no crisis. Pray when you do not desperately need an answer. Sit quietly before the Lord when there is no emergency. Learn the character of God. Learn His Word. Learn what pleases Him. Then, when the world becomes chaotic and loud, you will be far better prepared to discern what aligns with the voice of Scripture—and what does not. We sometimes wait until everything falls apart before asking the Holy Spirit to lead us. Then we want an answer by noon. But deep relationships do not flourish that way. Walking with God is daily. Prayer is daily. Scripture is daily. Surrender is daily. His Leading Produces His Fruit Another good test for what we believe is the Spirit’s leading is this: Look at the direction it is taking us. A few verses after Paul tells us to walk by the Spirit, he describes the fruit of the Spirit: “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” — Galatians 5:22–23 The Holy Spirit does not lead us deeper into bitterness, pride, hatred, selfishness, revenge, or uncontrolled living. He makes us more like Jesus. That does not mean every Spirit-led decision will be comfortable or easy. Some of the hardest things God has ever asked His people to do have required tremendous courage—steps of faith that seemed impossible apart from His strength. Peace does not always mean ease. Sometimes obedience is difficult. Yet even in difficult obedience, the Spirit continues to shape Christ in us, molding our hearts to reflect His love and character. One Step at a Time Maybe today you are asking God for direction. Do not make it more complicated than it needs to be. Open His Word. Pray. Listen. Test what you believe against Scripture. Do the last thing you already know God told you to do. And then take the next faithful step. You may not know what the road looks like a mile from here. You do not have to. You only need to walk with the One who does. The Holy Spirit is not merely available in moments of confusion or crisis. He is our Helper, Comforter, Teacher, and unfailing Guide every single day. Stay close to the Word. Stay close in prayer. Keep in step with the Spirit. And when God makes the next step clear, obey Him.

The Leading of the Holy Spirit

God Meets Us in Our Weakness
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9Most of us, myself included, have spent a lifetime trying to learn how to be strong. From an early age, we are taught to project confidence, to push through pain, and to hide our vulnerabilities from the world. We learn to keep going when we are tired, pushing past exhaustion with silent determination. We shoulder responsibilities, solve problems big and small, care for our families, and show up when others need us—even when our own hearts are weary. Step by step, we keep moving forward, sometimes through days that feel impossibly heavy, because we believe we must. There is nothing wrong with perseverance. Sometimes you simply have to stand your ground and keep moving. But somewhere along the way, a subtle lie creeps in—the belief that we are supposed to be strong enough for everything, that true faith means never faltering or feeling weak.We aren’t.And God never said we had to be.Paul learned this lesson in a deeply personal way. He pleaded with God to remove what he called a "thorn in the flesh"—an unrelenting struggle or pain that would not leave him, despite his fervent prayers. Three times Paul begged the Lord to take it away, and each time, God’s answer was not what Paul had hoped for. Instead, God told him:“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”God did not tell Paul, “Try harder.”He did not tell him, “Get yourself together.”He did not tell him, “A stronger Christian wouldn’t struggle with this.”Instead, God gave him something far better, something more enduring than instant relief or personal strength.Grace.I think sometimes we imagine that God can use us only when we have everything together—when our lives look polished, our hearts feel unwavering, and our faith seems unshakeable. We convince ourselves that we must be strong, confident, healthy, rested, fearless, and spiritually firing on all cylinders before God can accomplish anything through us.But that has never been the story of Scripture. But the story of Scripture is not the story of perfect people; it is the story of ordinary men and women who knew they needed God. Time and again, God chose those who trembled, doubted, or failed—those who brought their honest weakness into His presence.Moses felt inadequate.Gideon felt insignificant.David was overlooked.Elijah became exhausted and discouraged. Peter failed publicly.Paul carried a weakness he could not pray away.Yet God worked through every one of them—not in spite of their weakness, but often because of it. Their vulnerability became the very stage upon which God's strength was put on display.Their weakness did not disqualify them.It taught them where their strength had to come from.Psalm 103:14 says: “For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.”God already knows what you are made of.You do not have to convince Him that you are stronger than you are.You do not have to hide your exhaustion from Him.You don't have to pretend you aren't hurting. You do not have to walk into His presence wearing the mask you wear around everybody else.He knows. And He still loves you. There have been times in my own life when I thought strength meant carrying everything myself. Keep moving. Keep serving. Keep helping everybody else. Don't complain. Don't stop. But sooner or later, every one of us reaches something we cannot carry in our own strength. And strangely enough, that moment—when our strength finally gives out—can become holy ground. It is the place where God meets us, not with condemnation, but with compassion and power.Because sometimes it isn't until our strength runs out that we finally discover God's strength was there all along.Weakness brings us to a place where we have to say:“Lord, I cannot do this without You.”And that is not defeat. That is dependence. There is a great difference. The world tells us to become self-sufficient.Jesus teaches us to become God-dependent.The world says weakness should be hidden.Jesus says, “Come unto me.”The world says your value is measured by what you accomplish.God says you belong to Him because of grace.Somebody reading this today may be tired.Maybe physically tired.Maybe emotionally drained.Maybe carrying grief.Maybe fighting something nobody else knows about.Maybe you have reached the place where you don't know how you're going to keep going. You don't have to manufacture strength you don't have.Go to God exactly as you are. There is a prayer I have learned to pray many times:“Lord, I cannot carry this. I give it to You.”Then I pray.I believe. And I release it.That doesn't mean every problem disappears before I get up from prayer. It means I stop pretending the burden belongs entirely on my shoulders.God's grace is sufficient. Not someday. Not when you finally get yourself together. Not when the circumstances improve.Right here. Right now.Your weakness may be the very place where you encounter the strength of God in a way you never could have while standing tall on your own. In those moments, you discover a grace deeper than your striving, a power that holds you steady when you cannot hold yourself. So stop beating yourself up because you're tired.Stop thinking you have failed because you need help.Stop believing that strong Christians never struggle.Bring your weakness to Jesus. You may discover that the place where you feel weakest is exactly where Christ intends to shine the brightest, revealing His strength and sufficiency in ways that will encourage you—and perhaps others—far beyond what you could imagine.

God Meets Us in Our Weakness

Because I Was the One
“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders.” — Luke 15:4-5There was a time when someone asked me, in so many words, why I spend so much time going after the one.Why go to the hospital? Why answer the phone when someone is falling apart? Why make the extra visit? Why keep praying for someone who has wandered away? Why invest so much time in one hurting person when there are ninety-nine others who seem to be doing just fine?My answer is simple.Because there was a time when I was the one.I know what it is like to be lost.I know what it is like to wander.I know what it is like to need someone to care enough to come looking. And I know what it is like for Jesus to find you. That changes how you see people.Jesus tells us about a shepherd who had one hundred sheep and discovered that one was missing. Ninety-nine were still there. Ninety-nine were accounted for. Ninety-nine were safe. But one was gone. And to the shepherd, one mattered. That is the heart of Jesus. The shepherd did not say, “Well, ninety-nine percent isn’t bad.”He did not write the missing sheep off as foolish. He did not say, “It wandered away. Let it find its own way home.”He went after it.And notice what Jesus says: the shepherd went after the lost sheep “until he finds it.”That phrase gets me.Until he finds it.Not until the road gets hard. Not until darkness falls. Not until the sheep has been gone longer than expected. Not until the shepherd becomes frustrated. He keeps looking.Sheep rarely wake up one morning and decide to become hopelessly lost. Most of the time, they wander.Their heads stay down. One patch of grass leads to another. Then another. Then another. And eventually the sheep looks up and discovers the flock is nowhere in sight.People can drift from God the same way.It often does not happen all at once. One missed prayer. One compromise. One disappointment. One hurt. One season away from church. One unanswered question. One step becomes another, and before long someone looks up and realizes they have wandered farther than they ever intended. That is why I am careful not to look down on people who have drifted. I have lived long enough to know that any one of us can wander if we stop watching where we are walking. And I remember when I needed grace.I remember when I needed someone to pray for me.I remember when I needed the Shepherd. That is one reason ministry can never simply be about crowds, numbers, programs, attendance, or how many people we can fit into a room.Jesus sees individuals. He sees the one sitting alone. The one who has stopped showing up.The one whose family is falling apart. The one lying in a hospital bed.The one who feels forgotten. The one carrying grief nobody else can see.The one fighting a battle behind a smile. The one who believes nobody would notice if they disappeared.Jesus notices. The world may count people.Jesus knows them. And there is something else in this passage we should never miss. When the shepherd finally finds the sheep, he does not beat it back to the flock. He does not stand over it giving a lecture about how foolish it has been.He lifts it onto his shoulders. He carries it.What a picture of grace. The sheep that wandered does not even make the trip home under its own strength. The shepherd carries it.There have been seasons in my own life when I did not need someone standing over me telling me how badly I had failed. I already knew. What I needed was grace.I needed someone to remind me that God had not abandoned me.I needed the Shepherd to carry what I could not. That is the Jesus I have come to know. And because He came after me, I can never be comfortable forgetting the one who is still out there.Sometimes the “one” is not rebellious.Sometimes they are wounded.Sometimes they are confused.Sometimes they are grieving.Sometimes they are afraid.Sometimes they have been hurt by people who claimed to represent God.Sometimes they simply wandered farther than they realized.Whatever brought them there, our response should look like Jesus.Go.Look.Love.Pray.Listen.And when possible, help carry them home. There is a danger in becoming so comfortable among the ninety-nine that we forget the heart of the Shepherd.Church was never supposed to become a place where the found congratulate one another while the lost are forgotten. We were found so that we could join the Shepherd in His work. That does not mean we can save anyone. We cannot.Jesus saves. The Holy Spirit draws. The Father changes hearts. But we can go.We can pray.We can love.We can refuse to give up on people simply because they wandered. And perhaps today you are not among the ninety-nine.Maybe you are the one.Maybe you have drifted.Maybe you have gone farther than you ever intended.Maybe shame has convinced you that God is angry, disappointed, or finished with you.Hear the words of Jesus today. The Shepherd is still looking. You have not wandered beyond the reach of His grace. You are not forgotten. You are not just another number. You matter to Him.And when He finds His sheep, heaven does not respond with condemnation. There is joy.So why do I still go after the one?Why make the call? Why visit the hospital room? Why pray with the brokenhearted? Why reach out one more time? Why keep believing someone can come home?Because I remember something I never want to forget. There was a time when I was the one.And Jesus came looking for me.

Because I Was the One

I Didn’t Become a Better Me
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17The Bible is not a self-help book.Jesus did not die on the cross so I could become a slightly improved version of the man I used to be.When I got saved, I did not become a new and improved ray mileur.I became a new creature in Christ. That distinction matters.Much of what the world calls transformation is really improvement. We try to develop better habits, become more disciplined, manage our emotions, overcome weaknesses, think positively, and become a better version of ourselves. Some of those things may be useful. There is nothing wrong with developing discipline or correcting bad habits. But that is not the Gospel. The Gospel does not say, “Come to Jesus and He will help you fix yourself.”Jesus said we must be born again.Paul said we become a new creation. That is something altogether different. One of the greatest lies believers can accept is that salvation merely cleaned us up on the outside while leaving the same old person underneath. We can begin living as though God has simply thrown a clean robe over a filthy man and agreed not to look underneath it.We think, “God forgave me, but deep down I’m still the same person.”No.Scripture says:“Old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”Salvation is not God pretending something happened.Something happened.Christ reconciled us to God.Our sins were forgiven. We were made alive in Christ. We were brought from darkness into light. We were given the Holy Spirit. We became children of God.Paul continues:“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21Notice where the power rests. Not in us.In Him.My salvation was never dependent upon my ability to improve myself. If I could have fixed myself, I would not have needed a Savior.Jesus did not come to help the old Ray behave better. The old man had to die.Paul wrote:“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” — Galatians 2:20That is Christianity. Not self-improvement.Not religious rehabilitation. Not turning over a new leaf.Death and resurrection. The problem is that many Christians have been made new but continue to think like the old person. We still remember the sins.We remember the failures. We remember what people called us.Sometimes we remember exactly who we were before Jesus found us.And the enemy is more than willing to keep replaying those memories.“You haven't really changed.”“You know what you used to be.”“You're still that same person underneath.”But my past does not get the final word about who I am.God does. That does not mean Christians suddenly become incapable of sin.It does not mean temptation disappears. It does not mean we never stumble again.Anybody who has walked with Jesus very long knows better than that. There is still a battle between the flesh and the Spirit. There are still habits that must be put away, thoughts that must be brought into obedience, and areas of our lives that must be surrendered to God.But we fight that battle from a completely different position. We are not trying to become God's children. We are God's children. We are not trying to earn reconciliation. We have been reconciled through Christ. We are not trying to manufacture a new life.Christ has given us one. That is why Romans 8:6 warns us: “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”Where we set our minds matters. If I continually define myself by my failures, I will live chained to something Christ has already broken. If I continually stare backward at the man I used to be, I will have a difficult time walking forward as the man Christ has called me to be.There comes a point when we have to believe what God has said about us more than we believe what our feelings say about us.I say this often: We judge our emotions by the Word of God. We do not judge the Word of God by our emotions. You may not always feel like a new creation.Feelings change.God's Word does not.You may wake up some mornings painfully aware of your weaknesses. You may stumble. You may have days when you wonder how somebody who belongs to Jesus could struggle the way you do.Take it back to Scripture.“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”Not someday. Not after you finally get everything right. Not after you become spiritually impressive. In Christ. That is the foundation. And when I understand that, obedience changes.I am no longer desperately trying to earn God's love.I obey because I have been loved.I am no longer working to purchase grace.I obey because grace has already been given.I am not fighting sin hoping that someday God will accept me.I fight sin because in Christ I have already been accepted, forgiven, reconciled, and called to walk in newness of life.Grace does not give us permission to remain where we were.Grace gives us the power to leave it behind.Maybe somebody reading this today keeps returning to an old grave. You keep digging up the person you used to be.You keep rehearsing sins God has forgiven. You keep allowing yesterday to tell you who you are today.Stop listening to the tombstone. The old man died.Jesus Christ has given you life. You are not simply a repaired version of your old self. You are not Christianity's version of a remodeling project. You are a new creation. So today, don't spend your time trying to manufacture a better you.Surrender yourself to Christ.Renew your mind with His Word.Walk in obedience.Listen to the Holy Spirit. When temptation comes, remember who you belong to.When your past calls your name, remember that Jesus has called you by another name:Redeemed.Forgiven.Reconciled.His.The Bible isn't a self-help book. And thank God it isn't.Because I didn't need a few helpful suggestions.I needed a Savior. And when Jesus saved me, He didn't make me a new and improved Ray Mileur. He made me new. Let us PrayDear Heavenly Father, thank You that salvation is more than forgiveness written on a page. Thank You that through Jesus Christ You have given us new life.Help me stop defining myself by who I once was, what I once did, or even by the struggles I still face today. Teach me to believe what Your Word says about me.When the enemy reminds me of my past, remind me of the cross. When I stumble, lead me quickly to repentance and back into fellowship with You.Renew my mind through Your Word. Help me walk according to the Spirit rather than returning to the ways of the flesh.I cannot transform myself, Lord. I never could. So once again today, I surrender myself to You.I pray, believe, and release my life into Your hands, trusting the work You began in me and the grace that sustains me.Thank You that in Christ the old has passed away and the new has come.In Jesus’ name,Amen.
