That maybe there’s room for a little god of self, a little god of success, a little god of control.But around a campfire, there’s no room for illusions. There is one fire that gives light. One flame that warms. One God who stands alone—unchallenged, uncreated, unmatched.When we try to carry other gods, we don’t end up stronger— we end up divided, restless, and worn thin.Because nothing false can bear the weight we place on it.Lane learned this the hard way: Peace doesn’t come from balancing gods. Freedom doesn’t come from options.Strength comes from surrendering to the One who already reigns. One God. Daily Devotion "Salvation isn’t free—it just didn’t cost us anything."The price was paid in full by Christ. And that truth should stir awe, gratitude, and a sober sense of responsibility within us.We have encountered many who assume that because salvation is offered freely, it must therefore be cheap—or at least insignificant—since it required no personal sacrifice on our part. But salvation was purchased at the highest cost imaginable: the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. Grace may be freely received, but it was never freely obtained. That reality should awaken reverence in us and draw us into a life that honors the price that was paid.It grieves us to see how the mindset of “cheap grace” has taken root in parts of today’s church. When grace is misunderstood as permission rather than transformation, its power is dulled. Instead of following Christ wholeheartedly, many who bear the name “Christian” grow content with blending into the world around them. The freeness of grace is mistaken for a license to remain unchanged—producing little conviction, little repentance, and little evidence of new life.But grace that asks nothing of us—no surrender, no repentance, no transformation—is not the grace purchased at the Cross. It is a counterfeit grace, shaped to justify comfort rather than to call us into newness of life. True grace does not excuse sin; it frees us from it. It does not leave us as we are; it invites us to become who we were created to be in Christ.Cheap grace reduces faith to something shallow and transactional. Forgiveness is spoken of without repentance. Communion is received without self-examination. Baptism is celebrated without a commitment to discipleship. Absolution is assumed without embracing the responsibility of obedience. When faith is stripped of humility and sincerity, its witness loses its power.Is it any wonder, then, that the lives of many modern Christians fail to draw others to Christ? When there is little visible difference between those who claim faith and those who do not know Him, the compelling witness of the gospel is weakened. A life genuinely transformed by grace should stand apart—quietly, steadily, unmistakably—pointing others to the hope found in Christ alone.We have seen this misunderstanding of grace firsthand. When salvation is treated as something of little cost, it is often taken for granted. Over time, this attitude seeps into the culture of the church, softening conviction and dimming the light we are called to shine.But there is another way—a deeper, richer life of faith that acknowledges the weight of what Christ accomplished at the Cross. True grace humbles us. It calls us to repentance, invites us into transformation, and reorients our lives toward obedience and love. When we live this way, our lives become a living testimony to the costly and beautiful grace we have received. Many settle for a version of grace that requires nothing and changes little. But the grace won at the Cross is far more profound. It does not soothe our conscience—it sets us free. Anything less is only an imitation. Scripture"For by grace you have been saved through faith. We chase what we think will steady us, hoping it will carry us through the day.But no amount of striving can satisfy a soul that was created to be filled by God alone.Moses understood this truth in a way few people ever do. He wrote Psalm 90 after years of leading God’s people through the wilderness—a season marked by uncertainty, loss, exhaustion, and continual dependence on the Lord. If anyone had reason to ask God for relief, comfort, or an easier path, it was Moses.Yet his prayer is strikingly simple and deeply revealing. He didn’t ask for fewer problems or better circumstances. He asked God to satisfy His people in the morning with His unfailing love.Moses knew something we often forget: when the heart is filled with the steadfast love of the Lord, joy becomes possible no matter what the day holds. Circumstances may change. The road may be hard. But God’s love remains constant—steady, faithful, and sufficient.God’s unfailing love meets us fresh every morning. It is present in every sunrise, every breath, and every quiet moment of grace. It steadies us when the day feels uncertain and anchors us when life feels overwhelming. <h3>Walking Where the Waves Are</h3>There’s something deeply appealing about the shoreline. The sand beneath our feet is steady and familiar, grounding us in what we know. The water is close enough to touch—full of possibility—yet far enough to avoid discomfort or risk. From the edge, we can watch the waves roll in and still believe we’re part of the moment, all while staying safe. The shoreline is a place of comfort and observation, a threshold between certainty and the unknown.But we see in *Matthew, 14:22-33, that when Jesus came walking toward the disciples on the water, He didn’t call Peter back to the safety of the beach. Instead, He invited him into the very heart of the storm—a place where fear and faith collide, and where comfort is surrendered for the possibility of experiencing the miraculous.Walking on the water was never about Peter’s strength, bravado, or confidence. It was about simple, raw obedience in the midst of uncertainty. The miracle didn’t happen because the storm ceased or the waves calmed—it happened precisely because Peter stepped out while chaos still surrounded him, trusting that Jesus’ command was greater than his circumstances.How often do we linger at the shoreline, mistaking proximity for faithfulness? We pray, we listen, we observe—but our feet remain planted in the sand. We wait for calm seas before embracing costly obedience. Yet Jesus often meets us not in the absence of the storm, but in the very center of it—where our dependence on Him is all we have.The beach allows us to stay dry, unchallenged, and in control. The water, however, requires the courage to surrender certainty and the humility to trust. One lets us hold onto our plans; the other demands we let go and depend fully on Jesus, even when the outcome is unclear.Peter began to sink when his focus shifted from Jesus to the swirling winds and towering waves—but even then, Jesus was close enough to grab his hand. The storm didn’t disqualify Peter, nor did his moment of doubt end the story. Grace met him exactly where fear threatened to overwhelm.Sometimes the greatest act of faith isn’t just believing that Jesus can calm the storm. It’s trusting Him enough to step out onto the waves while the storm still rages—knowing that His presence is our anchor, no matter how high the waters rise. * Matthew 14:22-33 - Jesus Walks on the Water22) lmmediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23) And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24) but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25) And lin the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26) But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27) But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, q“Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”28) And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29) He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and rwalked on the water and came to Jesus. 30) But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, s“Lord, save me.” 31} Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32) And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33) And vthose in the boat wworshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Walking Where the Waves Are

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5The imagery Jesus gives us in John 15 paints a vivid picture of quiet trust and surrender. A branch, firmly attached to the vine, is not anxious about tomorrow’s weather or frantic in pursuit of what it needs. It does not dart from place to place searching for light or water, nor does it exhaust itself with worry. It simply abides—rooted and secure, drawing every bit of life and nourishment from the vine itself.This image reminds me how much of my own restlessness comes from forgetting my true source. Too often, I find myself striving—rushing from one solution to the next, trying to control outcomes, searching for fulfillment in places that were never meant to sustain me. But the branch flourishes not because of effort or movement, but because of its unbroken connection.Jesus’ invitation to abide is an invitation to union and communion with Him. To abide is to surrender the frantic search for what only He can give. It is a posture of restful dependence—trusting that He provides both sunshine and rain, growth and fruit, in every season.In Christ, I discover the freedom to stop striving and start receiving.
