A Journey through Psalms - the Glory of God
Psalm chapter 8
“The Glory of the Lord in Creation”
Imagine being a mom whose kids say, “Mom, I want…” or “Mom, why…?” a hundred times a day. Wouldn’t it be nice if they just looked up and adored You?
Now think about God. All day, every day, He’s peppered with prayers, “Do this, do that”.
In Psalm 8, David asks for nothing, Instead, he gazes upward on the moon and stars and takes time to ponder God’s creation. vs 3
David cannot contain himself. He places quill to parchment and the words flow. There are no complaints, no requests, just pure praise. “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! You set Your glory in the heavens.”
Addressing Him as “Lord, our Lord”, David distinguishes God from and elevates Him above all other gods who rival for dominance. Repeating His Name emphasizes His sovereign supremacy.
His Name encompasses all of God’s attributes and characteristics. When David says, “Excellent is Your Name.”, he speaks more than a title, he says “You are excellent.” David worships God for who He is and what He does. Every day, we need to follow David’s example.
If oppression steals your praise, do what David did. Go outside and look at the ‘work of His fingers’ vs 3. Marvel at the sun, moon, and stars. Be amazed at the vastness, complexity, and beauty of this world. Consider how BIG God is and how little we are. Our praise reminds us of the truth of God’s character and silences the lies of our circumstances.
While viewing God’s majestic creation, David ponders man’s significance. “What is man that You are mindful of him?” Vs 4. He concludes that mankind was not a mistake, nor an afterthought. God created us for a specific purpose. Of everything He made, God ordained and established mankind to ‘have dominion over all the works of His hands’. Vs 6. Since the beginning, God honored us with the responsibility to care for ‘all the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea.’ Vs 7,8 That assignment still exists today. Find ways you can take care of your little patch of earth.
The final words in chapter 8 are identical to the first. ‘O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!’ vs 9
Make it a point to adore Him every day.
And while you’re at it, look, really look, at your spouse, kids, and significant people. See them the way Jesus does. See them for who they are, not just for what they can do for you. And then love on them too!
