The Foundation of the Church

From the Word, in Matthew 16:18 (NLT): "Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it."

In this passage, Jesus is speaking to His disciples after Peter declares Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the living God. This moment occurs in the region of Caesarea Philippi, a place laden with religious and historical significance. It marks a pivotal point in Jesus' ministry, highlighting the establishment of the Church and Peter's role within it.

The key teaching in Matthew 16:18 is on the establishment and endurance of the Church. Jesus uses a play on words with Peter's name, "rock," to illustrate the foundational role Peter and his confession of faith play in building the Church. The promise that "all the powers of hell will not conquer it" reassures believers of the Church's divine protection and unassailable strength. This passage highlights the divine authority and continuity of the Church, emphasizing that it is Christ's work, built upon the faith of His followers.
