But the real test is in the dirt — in the mud, the mess, the days when we stumble because life knocks our legs out from under us.Scripture says, “For the righteous falls seven times and rises again…” (Proverbs 24:16). That means stumbling isn’t failure — staying down is.Here’s the truth we can’t dodge: we’re not perfect.We will stumble.But here’s the part the Lord keeps whispering to my spirit:“If you stumble… stumble forward.”Peter stumbled… but he stumbled forward. David stumbled… but he stumbled forward. The prodigal didn’t crawl home backward — he stumbled forward into the Father’s arms.And remember this when you stumble:“Your imperfections don’t disqualify you — they’re the reason you need to keep walking with Him.”The Lord isn’t looking for perfection in our steps. He’s looking for people who keep taking steps — people who keep walking with Him.Because a Christian who falls forward…Forward toward grace. Forward toward truth. That means none of them slip through the cracks. Not one falls unnoticed. Not one is wasted. The world might see a smudge on a page… but heaven hears a prayer.Some folks think prayer has to be polished. That you need the right words… the right posture… the right flow. But some of the most powerful prayers ever prayed were prayed without a single word. Just a broken heart leaning toward a faithful God.Because tears? They’re the language of the soul. They say things your mouth can’t.They confess what your pride won’t.They reveal what your heart has been carrying way too long.And the Lord — He reads every drop like a sentence.Sometimes a tear says, “Lord, I can’t do this anymore.”Sometimes it says, “Father, please don’t let go of me.”Sometimes it simply says, “I’m here… and I still believe.”And on those days when all you’ve got left is a tear on the page, remember this: A tear that falls in faith speaks louder than a thousand words spoken in fear.So if today is one of those days — if the weight is heavy and the tears come easy — don’t you think for a second that you’re failing at prayer. MY MOM’S OLD BIBLE — The world will tell you my mom didn’t leave behind much in the way of possessions, but she left me something far better — her old Bible. Torn, taped, and tattered, with pages barely hanging on and half the maps long gone, the old cover makes it look like I rescued it out of a dumpster rather than had it lovingly passed down to me.For more than 40 years, I carried that Bible like a man carries a compass in the wilderness. It was with me in the desert, the jungles, the mountains, and even in those mosquito-infested swamps. It rode with me on battleships, inside a squad car, in my backpack, and stuffed in my saddlebag. It stayed within arm’s reach like my government-issued Sig Sauer 9mm — ready for the next battle.Those pages traveled through every season of my life — through a divorce that nearly crushed me, through the burial of a child no parent should ever have to endure, through a military career that literally sent me around the world, and through police calls in the dead of night… the memories that still wake me up — the ones of people I couldn’t save, scenes I can’t forget, and moments only God could help me carry.Inside that Bible are two sets of handwriting — hers and mine — overlapping like a long conversation between a mother and her son. Her neat, steady notes. My desperate, late-night scrawl. Her prayers leaning forward. My tears soaking backward. The Word of God meeting both of us exactly where we were.Some nights, I wrote in those margins when I was hanging on by a thread. "The Old Pick-Up Story — Memories in the Rearview" Years ago, I knew an old man down in the bottoms who drove an old pickup truck that had survived a couple of decades of farm seasons that included; more than a couple of droughts, floods, hail storms, tornados, and a house full of country farm boys who “borrowed it sometimes without permission” and for Friday night football games and postgame gatherings down by the Big Muddy River.The paint was faded, the tailgate didn’t match, and the radio only worked if you smacked the dashboard just right — around here, we just call that country Bluetooth.But here’s the thing, that old man man loved that truck.Not because it sparkled.Not because it turned heads.But because it carried memories — dust on the floorboards, dents with stories behind them, and miles that smelled like sweat, hay, and a good day’s work.He never fussed about what it wasn’t — he was grateful for what it was: paid for, faithful, and always ready to fire up, even on cold mornings when smarter men stayed inside.One day someone asked, “Why don’t you trade it in for a newer one?”He grinned and said, “Son, this truck has hauled my firewood, got me to work, carried home groceries, Bibles, and grandkids. It’s helped me through storms and took me to church more times than I can count. A new truck might be prettier… but it wouldn’t come with these memories.”And that stuck with me.Some folks chase shiny things, while others thank God for the old blessings sitting right there in the driveway.Because sometimes contentment isn’t in getting something newer, it’s in remembering what’s already carried you through the miles, the messes, and the mercy of God.“But godliness with contentment is great gain.” — 1 Timothy 6:6 (ESV) “…I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content…” — Philippians 4:11 (ESV)Before you ask God for what’s next, take a moment to thank Him for what — and who — has already ridden shotgun through your story.

"When Prayer Becomes Optional"&nbsp; It breaks my heart to see how little prayer shows up in the lives of so many Christians today. We’ll talk about God, post about God, even ask others to pray — but actually slowing down to meet with Him? That’s where so many are running on empty.Not because they’re bad people, and not because they don’t love Jesus, but because life has gotten so busy, so fast, and so distracting that prayer quietly slips to the edges. We live in a world that keeps us overfed on noise and underfed on the Presence of God, and before we even realize it, we’re running on empty without ever stopping to meet with the One who fills us.Most folks can scroll for an hour on their phone or computer but struggle to pray for five minutes. And the enemy doesn’t mind that one bit — because a prayerless Christian is a powerless Christian.I am reminded when Jesus asked His disciples, “Could you not pray with Me even one hour?”Jesus wasn’t anger, He was heartbroken.And maybe that’s why it breaks my heart the way it does — because in ministry, we’re constantly picking up the pieces for believers who are spiritually dehydrated from a weak or neglected prayer life.They’re good people, hurting people, sincere people… but they’re running dry because they’re trying to face a spiritual world without a spiritual well. By the time they reach out, they’re exhausted, overwhelmed, and wondering why their faith feels thin. And the whole time, the living water their soul is aching for has been right there — waiting for them in prayer.The bottom line is, that prayer isn’t optional if we want to stay spiritually alive. It’s not just a church habit or a religious box to check. Prayer is how we breathe in the Kingdom. It’s how we carry our burdens without collapsing under them. It’s how the Holy Spirit reaches into the deepest parts of us and strengthens us from the inside out.And here’s the hope that keeps me praying: one praying believer really can shift the entire spiritual climate of a home, a family, a church, or even a whole community. I’ve seen it happen. A praying parent can change the atmosphere in their house. A praying Christian can hold back darkness right where they stand. God has always used one willing heart to make a difference far bigger than that person ever imagined.So today, I’m reminding myself — and you — not to let prayer be the last thing we turn to, but the first place our hearts run. Because before prayer changes anything around us, it changes something inside us. It steadies what’s shaking, it softens what’s hardened, it strengthens what’s weary. Prayer may not rewrite every situation overnight… but it will begin rewriting you.
