The mouth goes dry. The energy fades. The body weakens.Now imagine the same thing happening in your spirit.You’re still showing up. Still doing the motions. But inside—you’re empty. The joy is gone, the prayer life is weak, and worship feels like routine. That’s not just exhaustion. That’s spiritual dehydration.Jesus stood up in the middle of a religious festival—crowds all around, rituals in full swing—and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.” He wasn’t talking to pagans; He was talking to believers who were running dry while standing in the temple.Let’s talk about what causes that dryness… what it does to us… and how to get filled again.&nbsp; I. THE SYMPTOMS OF A DRY SOULSpiritual dehydration doesn’t happen overnight. It’s gradual.You start skipping prayer because you’re “too busy.”You read headlines instead of Scripture.You sing worship songs but stop really worshiping.Then one day you wake up and realize—your soul feels brittle. You’re working for God but not walking with Him. You’re pouring out what you no longer have.Just like the body gives warning signs—headache, weakness, fatigue—your soul gives warnings too:You lose peace easily.You react more, pray less.You feel distance where there used to be closeness.Those are early signs that the well is running low.&nbsp; &nbsp;II. THE CAUSE – CUT OFF FROM THE SOURCEA. Neglect of PrayerPrayer isn’t a duty—it’s a lifeline. When we stop praying, we stop breathing spiritually.1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.” That doesn’t mean we live on our knees all day—it means our heart stays connected to Heaven.You can’t fight battles with an empty tank. When we fail to refill through prayer, our spiritual stamina breaks down.&nbsp; B. Neglect of the WordMatthew 4:4 reminds us, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”The Word of God is not seasoning—it’s sustenance. If your Bible stays closed from Monday to Saturday, no wonder your spirit feels dry on Sunday.The Living Water flows through the Living Word.Neglecting Scripture is like refusing to drink and then wondering why you’re weak.&nbsp; C. Neglect of WorshipJohn 4:24—“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”Worship is not about singing songs—it’s about surrender.When worship becomes routine, the well runs dry.You can clap your hands, lift your voice, and still not touch the hem of His garment if your heart isn’t surrendered.Dry worship leads to dry hearts. But when the Spirit moves, even one whispered “Hallelujah” can open the floodgates again.&nbsp; III. THE CONSEQUENCES – THE DANGER OF DEHYDRATIONWhen your body is dehydrated, everything suffers—your mind, muscles, and focus.Spiritually, it’s the same.Spiritual fatigue: You’re doing ministry but without joy.Loss of discernment: You can’t tell truth from error.Emotional burnout: You’re carrying loads God never asked you to lift.Churches full of dehydrated Christians become deserts—busy, noisy, but barren of power.They’ve got lights, programs, and motion… but no living water.Beloved, God never called us to survive dry—He called us to overflow.&nbsp; IV. THE CURE – RETURNING TO THE LIVING WATERJesus didn’t say, “Go fix yourself.”He said, “Come to Me and drink.”A. COME TO JESUSIt starts by admitting your thirst.You can’t be filled if you won’t admit you’re empty.Programs won’t fix it. Personalities won’t fix it. Only Jesus satisfies the thirst of the soul.He told the Samaritan woman, “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.” (John 4:14)&nbsp; B. DRINK DEEPLYDon’t take a sip on Sunday and wonder why you’re dry by Wednesday. Drink daily—through prayer, the Word, and obedience.Psalm 63:1 says, “My soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”It’s not about working harder—it’s about sitting longer at His feet. That’s where the filling happens.&nbsp; C. STAY CONNECTEDA believer disconnected from fellowship dries up quickly. We were made to draw strength from one another.Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one… for if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.”You can’t stay full if you isolate yourself. When we gather—pray together, worship together, study together—rivers start to flow again.&nbsp; V. THE OVERFLOW – FROM THIRSTY TO THRIVINGWhen the Living Water flows through you, others feel it.That’s the beauty of John 7:38—“Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”Notice—Jesus didn’t say “a trickle.” He said rivers. Rivers don’t just sustain themselves—they refresh everything they touch.A hydrated Christian brings peace into chaos. A hydrated church revives a community. A hydrated preacher lights fires in dry places.When God fills you, you don’t have to try to make an impact—you just overflow.&nbsp; VI. THE CALL – COME AND DRINKMaybe today you feel dry.Maybe you’ve been running on empty—doing good things but without the Living Water flowing through you.Jesus still stands and cries out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.”Don’t wait for another service. Don’t wait for revival to come to town. Revival starts when a thirsty soul drinks again.You don’t have to stay dry another day. You don’t have to live in burnout or bitterness. Come. Drink. Be filled.&nbsp; CLOSING PRAYERDear Heavenly Father,We confess our thirst tonight. We’ve been busy doing things for You instead of staying close to You.Forgive us for trying to live on empty.Lord Jesus, fill us again with Your Living Water.Refresh every weary heart, every dry spirit, every tired soul in this place.Let Your rivers of living water flow through us and out of us—touching homes, families, and this community.We thank You for being the well that never runs dry. <h3>Why Me, Lord?</h3>A True Story of Faith, Obedience, and Grace in the Darkest Hours&nbsp; Part One - THE CALLThe phone rang at 1:30 a.m.—a call from Herrin ICU. A man wasn’t expected to live through the night, and his family was asking for “the guy in the cowboy hat” to come and pray.I got dressed quickly. Looking over at my wife, Anne, I said, “Why would they call me? With all the real preachers in Williamson County, why me? I’m just a country boy—not that bright, no major degrees, not that polish in my prayers and speech. There are plenty more qualified to pray than I am.”Still, I went. Driving to the hospital in the dark, I kept whispering under my breath, “Why me, Lord?”When I arrived, a man about my age lay on his deathbed, his wife standing beside him, weary and afraid. I prayed with her, prayed over him, and as the sun began to rise, I headed home—another long night as a first responder chaplain.I never saw them again after that morning. I had done what I was called to do—go, comfort, pray, and leave the rest in God’s hands. Looking back, I realize I didn’t need to follow up. It wasn’t my job to make God’s work succeed. My calling was simply to show up. Part Two — The Call BackThree months later, the phone rang again. “Are you the man in the cowboy hat who came to Herrin ICU that night?” the voice asked. I said I was.The caller paused, then said, “That was my dad. The doctors said he wouldn’t make it through the night—but he did. In fact, he’s doing well now. We just wanted to thank you for coming. We know God sent you.” I sat there, speechless. I hadn’t done anything but show up, pray, and trust God to handle the rest. Yet here was the proof that what I thought was a small act of obedience had been part of a much bigger miracle. “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9 (ESV) Part Three — The Second NightAbout a year later—almost to the day, almost to the hour—my phone rang again around 2:00 a.m. Another call from Herrin ICU.“Chaplain, there’s a family here asking for the man in the cowboy hat. Please come as quickly as you can.”I jumped out of bed, sore from a long day on a manhunt for a drug dealer. Anne handed me pain medication as I dressed and grabbed my white cowboy hat. Through tired eyes, I asked her again, “Why me?” Tears welled up as I muttered, “There’s got to be somebody better than me to take these calls.”Still, I went. The streets were empty as I drove through the night in my modified squad car, heart heavy. When I reached the hospital, the ICU doors slid open—and a woman came running toward me, arms wide, tears flowing.“Thank you,” she cried. “Thank you so much for coming.”I didn’t recognize her at first. Then I saw her husband standing beside her—the same man who wasn’t supposed to make it through the night a year ago. Part Four — The SonThe next words out of the woman’s mouth stopped me cold.“You prayed for my husband last year,” she said softly. “He wasn’t supposed to make it through the night—but he did. He’s fully recovered now, feeling better than he has in years.”Hearing these words, inside, my heart leapt for joy. I was praising God silently, careful not to disturb the ICU.But then came her next words. “You prayed for my husband… now we need you to pray for our son. He’s in a coma.”Just like that, my heart dropped. Tears welled up as I cryed inwardly, “Why me, Lord?”I steadied myself, my knees shaking as I walked toward that hospital room, praying silently.“God, I know You walk with me. I know You go before me and prepare the way. You wouldn’t send me if You hadn’t already made a way.”No one around me knew the battle raging inside—how fear wrestled with faith, how doubt bowed before obedience. But God knew. And in that quiet moment between my weakness and His strength, I felt Him whisper again, “This is why I send you, My son.”“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” — Psalm 145:18 (ESV) Part Five — The MiracleI entered the room. The young man—late twenties—lay motionless, tied to tubes and machines keeping him alive. &nbsp;“Here I am, Lord. I need You," I cried.Taking a deep breath, I began to pray with his mother, father, and young wife. As I prayed, the Holy Spirit nudged me to reach out and touch his knee.The moment I did, he suddenly came out of the coma—gasping for air, grabbing my arm like a man pulled from deep water.A surge of power rushed through me, from my body into his. I could barely stand. In an instant, that ICU turned from a place of mourning into a place of praise. Nurses rushed in, voices lifted, tears flowed. As for me, I slipped out quietly, too moved to speak. I don’t even remember hugging the mother or shaking the father’s hand. I just made my way to the car.Driving home as the sun rose behind me, tears streamed down my face. My body was spent, but my spirit was alive—crying and praising God all the way home.That morning, I stopped asking “Why me, Lord?” and started asking “What now, Lord?” Because when God calls, He already has a purpose—one we may not see until long after the prayer is prayed and the sun comes up. Part six - The LessonI don’t remember much after that morning—just sitting in the driveway as the sun climbed higher, realizing I’d just witnessed something holy. God didn’t need me that night. He allowed me to be there—to see, to feel, to know that He still moves in ways beyond our understanding.I used to ask, “Why me, Lord?” every time the phone rang in the dark hours. I don’t ask that anymore. Now, I simply say, “Thank You, Lord, for trusting me to go.”It’s not about eloquent prayers or polished sermons. It’s not about being the most qualified or the most confident. It’s about being available—especially when you’re tired, unsure, or feeling small.That’s where God shows His strength. That’s where miracles happen.Every call since then, every visit, every prayer, I carry that same truth in my heart: the power isn’t in the man wearing the cowboy hat. "If It’s Not Now, It’s Not Faith." ~ ray mileurFaith doesn’t wait for perfect conditions—it moves while the storm still rages. When God speaks, faith responds now, not later. Delayed obedience is often just disguised doubt. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Notice that word—now.True faith doesn’t bargain for proof or comfort. It steps out before the waters part, trusting that they will. If you’re waiting for everything to line up before believing, you’re not walking by faith—you’re walking by sight.Faith isn’t tomorrow’s promise.
